Fans angry over Lagos derby delay

Football fans are not happy about the delay of the Nigeria Premier Football League Lagos derby between Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City. Supporters are complaining about money spent on tickets, hotels, and other plans for the match.

The big game was set for Sunday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan. It got postponed because the stadium was needed for a political rally.

This news caused a lot of anger on social media. Fans who bought tickets and made travel plans showed their disappointment over the change.

One user on X, @SirJarus, shared pictures of five tickets he bought for the match. He said, "The first NPFL game I want to watch this season. I don buy 5 tickets for the game, shocked to hear they had postponed it for a political rally lol."

Another user, @PoojaMedia, also criticized the decision. He pointed out that Sporting Lagos had spent a lot on promoting the derby.

He wrote, "Sporting Lagos has been involved in massive publicity for the Lagos Derby vs. Ikorodu City; vendors have been paid for it, people have bought tickets, and the club is coming to sell their jerseys after much anticipation from fans; hotels are booked, and BOOM, Onikan Stadium won’t be available on Sunday."

He added, "A state with one standard pitch, not CAF or FIFA standard, that over 8 professional teams are fighting for, but politics is bigger."

Super Eagles star Victor Boniface also reacted angrily to the news. He wrote on X, "Big rubbish for that country to be honest, football can save a lot."

Similarly, @sola_sam talked about the lack of good football facilities in Nigeria. @Midefaw questioned whether this situation showed Lagos’ ambition to be a global player in football.

Another fan, @Voix_of_d_north, argued that football could be a strong tool for the country if Nigeria took the sport more seriously.

Meanwhile, @prymwrld shared worry that he might not be able to attend the game if it gets rescheduled for Friday.

The postponement has left fans waiting for news on a new date for the derby. The issue has once again highlighted the poor state of football facilities in Lagos.
