FIFA, the body that runs football worldwide, responded to critics on Friday. They promised to continue with an open consultation with stakeholders on a new private investment plan.
UEFA, the governing body for European football, has said they might boycott the World Cup. This is because of FIFA's plan to create a commercial branch that will manage its biggest events and allow private investors to buy shares in the company.
In a statement, FIFA mentioned that all member associations should get the chance to look at the plan. They stressed, “Nobody is selling football.”
FIFA added, “This is not something FIFA would ever entertain.” They acknowledged the feedback from confederations like UEFA and CONCACAF, which oversees football in North and Central America.
FIFA said, “We respect the feedback and concern aired in public and reaffirm our commitment to an open and democratic consultation.” They also noted that their consultation process was interrupted by wrong media reports.
FIFA intends to move forward with the consultation process to ensure that every member association can vote based on accurate information.
FIFA's plan could generate up to 20 billion for the FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative. If the plan gets the green light, each of FIFA's 211 member associations could receive a one-time payment ranging from 8 million to 20 million dollars.
