Nigeria’s Flamingos kept their winning streak alive at the 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup. They defeated Ghana 4-2 in an exciting match known as the Jollof Derby on Friday.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi scored the first goal for Nigeria in the 33rd minute. Captain Harmony Chidi increased the lead just before halftime, scoring in stoppage time.
Ghana’s captain Seidatu Wahab pulled one back in the 62nd minute. But Nigeria responded quickly, with Mary Dunstan scoring in the 70th minute to make it 3-1.
Kaosarat Akanji added a fourth goal for the Flamingos in the 87th minute. Gloria Ameaa scored Ghana’s second goal in the 90th minute, but it was too late to change the outcome.
Nigeria played the last half-hour with 10 players. Elizabeth Adesuyi received a red card in the 59th minute, but the Flamingos held on for the win.
This victory follows Nigeria’s impressive 5-0 win against Niger Republic just three days earlier. Captain Chidi opened the scoring in that match too. Awawu Bashiru scored the second goal, and Ohunene Sunday, Dunstan, and Ayomide Rotimi finished off the game with late goals.
With this win over Ghana, the Flamingos have scored nine goals in their first two matches. They are showing strong attacking play in Côte d’Ivoire.
This tournament is also part of Nigeria’s preparation for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. Head coach Akeem Busari mentioned that this competition helps the team discover their strengths and weaknesses before the big event.
The 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup changed to a league format after Benin Republic withdrew. Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Togo, Niger, and hosts Côte d’Ivoire are competing.
Next, the Flamingos will focus on their upcoming matches as they aim for regional glory and prepare for the World Cup.
