Flying Eagles Aim for U-20 AFCON Spot Against Ivory Coast

Flying Eagles head coach Abdul Maikaba believes his team will recover from their recent loss at the WAFU B U-20 Championship. They will face the hosts, Ivory Coast, in a crucial match on Wednesday for a spot at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. This information comes from PUNCH Sports Extra.

The Flying Eagles lost 2-0 to Burkina Faso in their last group match on Sunday. This defeat meant they missed the chance to finish at the top of their group. Instead, they will play against the hosts in the semi-finals.

Maikaba's team had already secured a spot in the knockout stage after wins against Ghana and Togo in their first two games. They needed at least a draw against Burkina Faso to finish first in the group and have a better matchup in the semi-finals.

Now, they will take on the hosts, Ivory Coast, on Wednesday. Burkina Faso will meet Niger in the other semi-final match.

Only the winners of the semi-finals will qualify for the 2027 U-20 AFCON in Ghana. Maikaba is optimistic about Nigeria's chances in this upcoming match.

"Football is about learning, responding, and showing character in difficult moments. We will learn from this setback, stay united, and shift our full focus to the semi-final against hosts Ivory Coast. Our belief remains strong, our spirit unbroken, and our mission unchanged," Maikaba said on Monday after their defeat to Burkina Faso.

Nigeria has won the U-20 AFCON seven times. Maikaba, who just took on this role, hopes to guide the team to Ghana next year.

This tournament will also act as the qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan.
