Football Fans Honor Two Officers Lost in Crash

Football fans and players in Teesside have honored two Cleveland Police officers who died in a road accident.

On Saturday, BBC reported that PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough lost their lives when their police car crashed head-on with another vehicle going the wrong way on the A66 near Middlesbrough early on 22 August. Five people in the other vehicle also died.

Before Middlesbrough’s Championship match against West Bromwich Albion at Riverside Stadium, fans held a minute’s applause. The stadium screen showed pictures of the two officers as supporters and players paid their respects.

Tributes were also made at a match between Seaton Carew FC and FC Hartlepool. PC Blades had been a junior football coach at both clubs and was a familiar face in the local football scene.

Seaton Carew coach Marcus Newing, a friend of PC Blades, described the last week as “horrendous.” He added that the support from people all over the country had been comforting. He remembered PC Blades as a loving father and husband who was always ready to help others.

“He was giving to everybody, he was daft as a brush, the smile that would light up a room and he loved being around people,” Mr Newing said.

Marty Hewitt, Seaton FC ambassador, mentioned that the tragedy had united rival clubs. “Everyone just wants to put some time back and take a moment out and reflect on what Matty’s done and obviously for the life of Tom as well,” he said.

Middlesbrough FC also paid their respects to the officers, praising their hard work and the efforts of Cleveland Police in keeping the community safe.

On Friday evening, Hartlepool United held a two-minute silence before their National League match against Eastleigh.

The crash investigation is ongoing, with 24 people arrested in connection with the incident. The five people in the other vehicle who died were identified as Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 17.

The tributes show the strong bond between the officers and the communities they served, with football fans and clubs coming together to remember their lives and dedication.
