Former West Ham Goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko Passes Away at 64

Former West Ham and Czech international goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko has died at the age of 64. This sad news came on Monday, five years after he was diagnosed with cancer, according to the English Championship club.

Miklosko played for West Ham for seven years. He joined the club from Banik Ostrava in 1990 and made nearly 400 appearances between 1990 and 1997.

He was key in helping West Ham get promoted to the English top flight in both 1991 and 1993. Fans loved him, and they continued to sing his name long after he left the club.

After his playing days, Miklosko returned to West Ham as a goalkeeping coach.

In December 2024, he announced that he would stop his cancer treatment. He told Czech media that he wanted to "live a normal life."

West Ham United said in a statement, "It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of legendary former goalkeeper and coach, Ludek Miklosko."

They added, "Rest in peace Ludek, our beloved, inspirational goalkeeper and gentle giant of a man."

Banik Ostrava also expressed their sorrow over his passing. They called him an "outstanding goalkeeper and above all a great personality."

West Ham said there would be a moment of appreciation for Miklosko during Tuesday’s League Cup third-round match against Fulham.

His son, Martin, shared the family’s grief. He said they were devastated but found comfort in the support his father received during his illness.

Martin said, "We are heartbroken at his loss, but take huge comfort from the immense support he received from all of you, along with the knowledge that he is now at peace and no longer suffering."

He added, "Dad simply loved West Ham United, and especially hearing his name sung loud and proud at every game. The club, and its fans, were and always will be a part of our family, so thank you all from the bottom of our hearts."

Miklosko represented Czechoslovakia before later playing for the Czech Republic at the international level.
