Nigerian singer Stephen “Papi Urhobo” Ebihor has died after a long illness.

Urhobo Worldwide, a digital community that supports Urhobo culture and music, shared the news in a statement on its Instagram page on Tuesday.

The group did not say when Papi Urhobo died or give details about the illness that took his life. They also asked fans and the public not to share unverified information, especially about his death and burial plans.

Urhobo Worldwide mentioned that Papi Urhobo’s family will announce the burial date and other details later.

The statement said: “With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our dear brother, friend, colleague, and fellow entertainer, Stephen Ebihor aka Papy Urhobo. We politely ask the public, friends, colleagues, and fans to avoid spreading unverified information or details about his burial until the family provides an official statement.

“The family will update the public at the right time. We appreciate everyone for their love, prayers, and support and urge friends and the public to pray for his wife and children during this tough time. May Papy’s soul rest in peace.”

While the exact cause of Papi Urhobo’s death is still unclear, he had earlier talked about suffering an accident.

In a video he shared on Instagram on 29 July, Papi Urhobo explained that the accident caused a cracked bone that stopped him from walking. He asked Nigerians for help to raise money for surgery, saying it would help him walk again.

In another video posted on 2 August, he updated fans on his health and thanked those who supported his medical expenses.

Additionally, Papi Urhobo’s wife also sought financial help for his treatment. In a video shared on the Facebook page of Ossai Success, who is the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, she asked Nigerians to help raise funds for the medical tests needed before the surgery.

She mentioned that her husband needed a scan or X-ray before the hospital would admit him for the procedure.

Papi Urhobo became popular for his unique voice on Timaya’s 2007 hit, “Ogologomma”, where his performance stood out in the song.

This song was part of Timaya’s debut album, “True Story.”

The musician from Delta State earned respect for his powerful voice and early contributions to Nigerian dancehall and Afropop music.

Papi Urhobo mixed his Urhobo musical heritage with modern Nigerian sounds, giving his performances a special touch.
