France will begin their push for a third World Cup title on Thursday when they meet Morocco in a thrilling quarter-final match.
After a month of exciting matches that eased worries about high ticket prices and political issues, the biggest World Cup ever is down to just eight teams.
France has been the standout team in the tournament, showcasing amazing attacking play. They will face their biggest challenge yet against African champions Morocco at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, near Boston.
Les Bleus have made it to the quarter-finals in style, netting 14 goals in five matches. Seven of those goals came from their star captain Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe is one of four top strikers competing for the World Cup’s Golden Boot as the tournament nears its end. Argentina’s Lionel Messi leads the scoring chart with eight goals, while Mbappe and Norway’s Erling Haaland have seven each. England’s Harry Kane has six goals.
Thursday’s match is a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semi-final in Qatar, which France won 2-0. They later lost the final to Argentina.
Tactical Strategy
Morocco has also performed well on their way to the quarter-finals. They sailed through the group stage before defeating the Netherlands in the last 32 and beating Canada in the round of 16 last weekend.
The Atlas Lions will pose a threat to France with their mix of skill, strength, and tactical strategy led by coach Mohamed Ouahbi. He was in charge when Morocco won the under-20 World Cup last year.
The winner of this match will face the winner of Friday’s game in Los Angeles between European champions Spain and Belgium.
Spain advanced by eliminating Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in the last 16 on Monday with a solid 1-0 win.
While Spain has not played as explosively as France, they believe they can handle Belgium, who have been gaining momentum during the tournament.
Belgium faced a tough group stage, with dull draws in their first two games. They bounced back by defeating New Zealand 5-1 to move on to the knockout rounds.
In the last 32, they came from behind to beat Senegal 3-2 after being down 2-0 with just four minutes left. They then delivered their best performance in the tournament by beating the United States 4-1 in Seattle on Monday.
