The police in Ekiti State have announced the rescue of worshippers kidnapped during an attack on a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) crusade in Eda Oniyo-Ekiti. This rescue happened in the Ilejemeje Local Government Area of the state.
The police spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, who is a superintendent of police, shared this news in a statement. He confirmed that the victims were freed on Friday.
The victims, mostly from Eda Oniyo-Ekiti, were taken on Tuesday, April 28. Armed men invaded an open-air crusade organized by the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC). During the attack, the pastor leading the service was killed. Fifteen worshippers were kidnapped and taken away.
Among those kidnapped, most were women, along with two young boys and several children aged between two and four years. The kidnappers first asked for a ransom of N1 billion for their release but later lowered it to N50 million. The community managed to raise and pay N10.5 million, but the kidnappers still refused to let them go.
Tragically, one of the 15 victims reportedly died while in captivity. The surviving victims are said to be in critical physical and emotional condition.
Mr Abutu explained that the rescue operation was the result of ongoing intelligence work and teamwork among the police, the military, the Amotekun corps, local hunters, the Ekiti State Government, and other security agencies.
He mentioned that the rescued victims have been taken to the hospital for medical checks and treatment. This is to ensure they get proper care and to assess their health.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, commends the dedication, professionalism, and teamwork shown by all security stakeholders. Their efforts led to the successful rescue of the victims.
“He particularly appreciates the Ekiti State Government under Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji. Their support to the security agencies greatly helped in making this operation successful.
“The commissioner also thanks the good people of Ekiti State for their continued cooperation, alertness, and quick sharing of useful information.
“While we are stepping up efforts to catch the kidnappers, the Commissioner of Police reassures residents about the police's commitment to protecting lives and property in the state,” the statement added.
The Commissioner also urged the public to stay alert and keep supporting the police and other security agencies. They should report any suspicious person or activity to the nearest police station or call the command’s emergency number: 08062335577.
