Shakiru Giwa has stepped down as head coach of Inter Lagos after a hard start in the Nigeria Premier Football League. The newly promoted team is still looking for their first win after eight matches, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The club announced his exit on Tuesday through a statement on its official X account. They thanked the coach for his work, especially for helping the team get promoted from the Nigeria National League to the NPFL.
“Coach Giwa has been an important part of the club’s journey, most notably leading Inter Lagos FC to promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL),” the club said.
“This achievement represents a significant milestone in the club’s history and an important part of its growth.
“The club expresses its sincere appreciation for his dedication, commitment and contribution to this historic achievement. His role in guiding Inter Lagos FC to the NPFL will remain a valued part of the club’s story.”
The club also wished Giwa well in his future coaching career. They added, “As both parties move forward, Inter Lagos FC wishes Coach Giwa every success in his future coaching endeavours.”
Giwa’s exit comes as Inter Lagos struggles to find its footing in the top flight. The team sits at the bottom of the league table with just two points from eight matches. They have not managed to win any of their opening games.
Giwa led Inter Lagos to the NPFL for the first time in the club’s history. This was a big achievement before their tough start in the new season.
Inter Lagos ended their statement by thanking Giwa for his service and contribution to the club’s journey.
