Dutch football star Ruud Gullit has raised concerns about Ajax coach Míchel Sánchez and how he uses Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare. Gullit is puzzled by Arokodare’s spotty selection even though he scores goals, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Arokodare has had a strong start since he joined Ajax on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in July. He has scored seven goals and provided two assists in 10 matches across all competitions.
But the Nigerian player has not been a regular starter. He has only started four Eredivisie games and played the full 90 minutes just once, which was against Telstar.
On a football talk show called Rondo on Ziggo Sport, Gullit questioned why Sánchez keeps leaving Arokodare on the bench despite his goal-scoring ability.
"That big striker (Tolu Arokodare, ed.) scores goals every time, then he’s on the bench again, and then not again. I don’t quite understand it," Gullit said.
Gullit also mentioned that he worries about Sánchez’s behavior on the sideline. He feels that the coach’s nervousness might affect the players.
"I get nervous watching that coach. He is not sitting on the bench and is standing there nervously. He makes a nervous impression, and that is not what you want," Gullit said, according to FC Update.
Ajax has had a shaky start to the season, losing points at home against Heerenveen, Excelsior, and NEC. This has raised doubts about how the team is performing under their new coach.
Despite this, Gullit hopes Ajax will stay competitive for the title. He believes that doing well at the top of the table will also help Dutch football.
For Arokodare, keeping up his goal-scoring could help him earn a more important spot in the team as Ajax looks for better consistency in the Eredivisie.
