A member of the Federal Character Commission and former House of Representatives member from Ogun State, Kayode Oladele, has said that Mr Abayomi Hunye, who was the last Managing Director of Ogun State Waste Management Agency, made a mistake by joining the All Progressives Congress governorship primary election without any political backing or support across the state that could help him win.
Oladele stated that the results of the primary election showed that party members strongly preferred Senator Solomon Adeola, known as Yayi, who became the party’s governorship candidate for Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement on Monday, Oladele said, “The scale of massive support enjoyed by Senator Adeola Yayi across Ogun State made it clear that Hunye entered a contest for which he lacked the necessary political structure, grassroots network and wide acceptance among party members, to say the least.
“Mr Hunye was certainly ill-advised to enter the race without first building a strong political structure and gathering the support needed to compete well in a statewide contest.
“The results spoke clearly and without doubt. Party members across Ogun State voted heavily for Senator Solomon Adeola Yayi because they believe in his leadership ability, experience and vision for the state.
Voting Patterns
Oladele pointed to the voting pattern in Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area, which is Hunye’s home ward, as proof of the aspirant’s struggle to gain support even within his own political area.
According to Oladele, party members in Tube Ward voted largely for Yayi, “showing that you cannot build something on nothing; even those closest to Hunye preferred the eventual winner of the primary election.
“The fact that Senator Adeola got massive support in Mr Hunye’s own ward of Tube is significant.”
Oladele noted that “the APC primary election was transparent, credible and reflected the wishes of party members across the three senatorial districts of the state.”
He argued that the outcome confirmed Adeola’s position as the most accepted candidate in the race.
Moving Forward
The former lawmaker added that Yayi’s victory came from years of political work, strategic grassroots efforts, and a consistent investment in the welfare of party members and the people of Ogun State.
He said that APC members should now focus on uniting the party and maintaining the momentum from the primary election instead of getting caught up in issues from the contest.
“The primary election has come and gone. The party has spoken through its members and produced a candidate who enjoys broad support across Ogun State, something that has never happened before in the history of the State.
“The task ahead of all of us now is to work together, unite and ensure victory for the APC in the upcoming election. Personal ambitions must yield to the common interest of the party and the people of Ogun State,” Oladele stated.
When reached for comments, Hunye said that the statements from Oladele and others were because his governorship ambition, which many thought was insignificant, is now making others uneasy.
The former OGWAMA boss said that his governorship dream is now coming to light, hence the repeated statements from others.
He said, “The claim that I have lost my ward is simply false and against what the public can see. There are videos of the strong support we continue to receive, and these were shown on national television for everyone to witness.
“The truth is that such comments are being made because some people are getting increasingly uneasy about how things are unfolding in our favor.
“A man they once thought could not achieve anything politically is now making them restless and forcing them to address the press repeatedly.
“We remain focused and undistracted. I give all glory to God for the growing support we continue to enjoy and for how far He has brought us.”
It is also reported that the former OGWAMA boss has filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Abuja, challenging the outcome of the party’s recent governorship primary election.
Hunye, while speaking to journalists recently, said he wants the court to cancel the primary election, which he called fraudulent and full of irregularities.
