FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the independence of football's judicial bodies. This comes after the red card suspension of US striker Folarin Balogun was overturned, sparking a lot of talk.

Infantino said the ruling was made on its own, following FIFA's disciplinary processes. He did admit he spoke with US President Donald Trump about the issue.

The issue started when FIFA’s independent Disciplinary Committee overturned Balogun’s red card. This led to criticism from many in the football community about the timing of the decision. Some speculated whether Trump had influenced the decision after he said he had spoken up for the player.

In a statement on Monday, Infantino noted that FIFA’s judicial bodies work independently from FIFA’s leadership. He said, "I have seen the public comments regarding the decision of the independent FIFA Disciplinary Committee related to the suspension of Folarin Balogun, and I would like to reiterate a fundamental principle of FIFA’s governance."

He added, "FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them. Their independence is essential to the credibility and integrity of football, and this must always be respected."

Infantino confirmed he had a chat with Trump about the case. But he denied that their talk had any effect on the decision. He said, "Yes, I regularly discuss matters related to the FIFA World Cup with the President of the United States, and on this matter, I did receive a call from President Donald Trump, just as I receive calls from heads of state, government officials, football stakeholders and business executives from around the world on many different issues."

He continued, "During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies. That is how FIFA’s system works, and it is a principle that I will always uphold."

Infantino also mentioned that while he may agree or disagree with some rulings, he does not interfere with FIFA’s judicial work. He stated, "I read the decisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee when they are issued. Sometimes I am surprised by them. Sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I disagree."

He added, "What I always do, however, is respect those decisions and the autonomy of the bodies that make them. Whether we personally like a decision or not is irrelevant. Respect for independent institutions and the rule of law is what protects the integrity of our competitions and the credibility of FIFA at all times."

The Balogun decision has brought back discussions about FIFA’s governance and the independence of its disciplinary bodies. FIFA has claimed that its judicial bodies, including the Disciplinary Committee, Ethics Committee, and Appeal Committee, operate separately from the FIFA Council and the president. This principle was enforced after corruption scandals that hit football a decade ago.

PUNCH reports that former FIFA president Sepp Blatter often said political leaders should not interfere in football matters. FIFA has also often pointed to the need for independence when dealing with disputes involving governments and national football associations. According to FIFA rules, member associations can face penalties if governments are found to have wrongly influenced football administration.

This latest issue raises eyebrows because it involved a direct conversation between Infantino and the US president about an active disciplinary case. Infantino insists their talk was only about the ongoing legal process and that no influence took place.

Neither FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee nor its Appeal Committee has said that outside influences changed the ruling. They maintain that decisions are based only on the FIFA Disciplinary Code and the evidence presented in each case.

With the overturning of Balogun’s suspension, the US forward is now available for selection. The debate over football governance, judicial independence, and political access will likely go on.
