Kenneth Okonkwo Shares WhatsApp Chats, Stands by Bribery Claims Against Peter Obi and NDC

Kenneth Okonkwo, a leader of the African Democratic Congress, has shared what he calls proof of bribery involving Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress.

Okonkwo, who used to be an actor and is now a politician, claimed on Monday that Obi and other NDC leaders in the South-East collected N10 million from House of Representatives aspirants and N20 million from senatorial aspirants.

He said that one of the aspirants, Obunike Ohaegbu, gave him details of these alleged payments and a receipt.

These claims have led to Obi’s legal team filing a lawsuit against Okonkwo.

Obi, who is a former governor of Anambra State, sent a letter on June 9, 2026, through his lawyers led by Alex Ejesieme (SAN). In the letter, he demanded N5 billion in damages and a public apology from Okonkwo.

He warned that he might take further legal steps if Okonkwo does not meet his demands.

On Wednesday morning, Okonkwo took to his X handle to share alleged WhatsApp chats between him and Ohaegbu. He said these chats back up his claims about Obi’s role in the party’s primary elections.

Okonkwo wrote: “Obunike Ohaegbu, when I asked him to prove that Peter Obi was responsible for asking the N10 million from him and the other HOR aspirants and N20 million from the Senate aspirants, he made it clear that when he asked the party who approved the payment, they named Peter Obi and the caucus leaders who were brought together by Peter Obi.”

He also shared parts of the chat, with Ohaegbu saying: “My brother, the entire NDC project, at least from my personal experience, has left me feeling deceived and profoundly disappointed … While other states, particularly Kano and several states in the North, seemed to be having talks and consultations to reach an agreement, neither I nor, to the best of my knowledge, any aspirant from Anambra State was invited to any meeting for the purpose of negotiating or agreeing on a consensus arrangement.

“Because of this, I gathered my supporters and took part fully in the primary election process, believing the results would choose the party's candidates. This naturally raises a key question. If no consensus meeting was held with the aspirants in Anambra State, and no agreement was made among those seeking nomination, my brother Ken, how did your friend come up with the list of candidates that he supposedly produced at Johnwood Hotel in Abuja?

“Consensus requires talks, negotiations, and agreement among stakeholders. If there is no talk, no negotiation, and no agreement, there cannot be any consensus. If aspirants were told to join primaries while candidate lists were allegedly being prepared elsewhere, then serious questions arise about the integrity of the whole process. If that is not fraud, then the word fraud must have another meaning…”

In another post, Okonkwo explained his choice to go public with the allegations. He insisted he has a responsibility as a lawyer and citizen to report what he sees as wrongdoing.

He stated, “Let me make it clear that as a citizen and a lawyer, I have a duty to report every crime against the state that I know of. The people of the South-East have suffered enough.

“No one should take them or any Nigerian for granted or do any fraud against them without facing consequences.”

Earlier, PUNCH Online reported that Okonkwo rejected Obi’s lawyers’ demand. He said he had not read the letter yet.

Okonkwo mentioned that he would reply formally after looking over the letter.

He also warned that any legal action could lead to revealing information he learned while serving as a spokesperson.

Okonkwo used to be an ally of Obi but they parted ways after Obi left ADC for NDC.
