The Senator for Nasarawa South in the National Assembly, Mohammed Onawo, is now the governorship candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement in the 2027 elections in Nasarawa State.

Onawo was chosen during the party's special delegates primary on Saturday in Lafia. Delegates from all 13 Local Government Areas of the state affirmed him as their candidate.

This congress was called to fill the position left vacant by the former candidate, Dr Mohamed Auwal, who is also the Nasarawa State Chairman of APM.

After his confirmation, Onawo expressed gratitude to the party members for their trust. He promised to run a campaign based on issues, focusing on security, infrastructure, agriculture, education, and job creation.

“I accept this nomination with humility and a strong commitment to serve the people of Nasarawa State. Together with APM, we will build a state where every citizen has opportunity and hope,” he said.

Onawo stated that he is the most experienced candidate running for governor now. He has served in the state legislature, the House of Representatives, and currently as a senator.

He said he brings political experience and a strong grassroots network, especially in Nasarawa South. He believes he can offer a credible option for the people in 2027.

“As a two-term House of Representatives member, former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, and now a Senator, I have built alliances across the state and beyond. Therefore, I will be the next governor of the state by the grace of God,” he emphasized.

Onawo assured that his government would focus on the people and aim to bring prosperity to every home, building on his past and current achievements.

He is hopeful that the APM will win the governorship if the Independent National Electoral Commission holds a free, fair, and credible election in 2027.

Earlier, Auwal mentioned that he withdrew from the race for party unity and to support a candidate who has wider appeal ahead of 2027.

The State Chairman of APM praised Onawo as a grassroots politician with the experience and ability to lead the state. He added that the party is ready to mobilize in all 13 LGAs for victory.

Officials from INEC and security agencies monitored the congress.
