Lawal Reflects on 1996 Olympic Gold Win

Garba Lawal, a member of Nigeria's 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning football team, shared with PUNCH Sports Extra that winning in Atlanta felt almost like winning the World Cup. He said this victory was the highlight of his football career.

Lawal, who is now 52, believes that this achievement stands out from anything else Nigerian football has done.

From 1994 to 1998, Nigeria had a generation of great players who could match any team worldwide. They reached the World Cup twice but did not go past the knockout stage.

However, the Olympic Eagles won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Lawal thinks this win is even more significant than advancing in the World Cup.

"It is similar because it was special. We were the first African country to do so before Cameroon did it in 2000," Lawal told PUNCH Sports Extra.

"Nobody gave us a chance to win that football event. When you think of the quality of the opponents we played against, look at the calibre of players Brazil had.

"They had Bebeto, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Juninho and many others. In the final against Argentina, they had Simeone, Zanetti, Crespo, Ortega and others. The Mexican team also had world-class players, including their goalkeeper. There were a lot of quality players, but we had belief and luck. We did our best, and we were lucky."

When asked about how the team celebrated after winning, Lawal said there was not much of a celebration. He explained that the main feeling was to go home after a long period of training that kicked off in Enugu. They traveled through Dallas and Florida before reaching Atlanta.

"There was nothing special about how we celebrated," Lawal said.

"Everyone wanted to go home. Some players wanted to join their new clubs. What mattered to us, and what we remember with pride, is that gold medal."

August 3, 2026, marked thirty years since Nigeria's Olympic football team defeated Argentina 3-2 in the final at Sanford Stadium, Athens, Georgia, making Nigeria the first African nation to win this event.
