Children under 12 will see more focus at the 2026 Lekki Scrabble Classics. The organisers are adding a special U-12 category for the tournament, which takes place from September 26 to 27.

This new category aims to help young players develop their skills, gain experience in competition, and possibly become top Scrabble players in the future.

With a top prize of $1,000, this tournament will include a section for kids for the first time at the Lekki Scrabble Club’s Classics. This event has mostly been for more experienced players.

President Samuel Anikoh explained why they started this initiative. He believes that getting kids into competitive Scrabble early can help find and train the next champions for Nigeria.

Anikoh pointed out the advantages of starting to play the game young. He mentioned defending champion Abdulmumeen Jimoh as a great example of how starting early can pay off.

Jimoh has been a strong player in Nigerian Scrabble lately, having begun his journey at a young age. "As an early starter himself, Jimoh is evidence that starting early does have its benefits, which is why the Club is introducing a children’s section at the 2026 Lekki Classics event.

This is building on our school Scrabble programme and providing a platform for our young U-12 players, a chance to begin to experience competitive Scrabble," Anikoh said.

This new plan is expected to boost Nigeria’s Scrabble scene by giving talented young players a chance to sharpen their skills and learn from some of the best in the sport.
