Poland striker Robert Lewandowski is aiming for a goal milestone when the White-Reds face the Super Eagles in a friendly match at the Stadion PGE Narodowy in Warsaw today.
Lewandowski has played 166 games for Poland and scored 89 goals. If he finds the net against Nigeria, he will hit the 90-goal mark. This will add to his record as Poland’s top scorer and bring him closer to 100 goals.
He made his debut for the national team on September 10, 2008.
The 37-year-old is expected to start the match after playing only 45 minutes in Poland’s last game against Ukraine, which ended with a 2-0 loss.
Changes to the Team
Poland coach Jan Urban confirmed he will make several changes to his starting lineup. He said Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara will take over from Marcin Bułka. Piotr Zieliński is also set to start.
Urban said, “Expect numerous changes. There were many in the first match, and there will be many in the second. These are friendly matches, so when, if not now, should we try different things and give the players a chance?”
He added, “We made nine changes during the match against Ukraine. I watched other teams in friendly matches; they made 10 or 11 changes. That’s normal in such matches.”
History Between the Teams
Today’s match at the 58,000-capacity Stadion PGE Narodowy will be the second meeting between Poland and Nigeria at the senior level.
The teams last met in March 2018 as part of their preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. On that occasion, Nigeria won 1-0 in Wrocław, with Victor Moses scoring the only goal.
Lewandowski will look to lead his team to victory and avoid another defeat at home as Poland gets ready for future international matches.
