Nigeria missed a win in a thrilling match on Wednesday as Poland scored late to make it 2-2 in an international friendly at the Stadion PGE Narodowy in Warsaw.
The Super Eagles seemed set for a much-needed victory after substitute Paul Onuachu scored a penalty in the second half. But Przemysław Wiśniewski found the net with almost the last kick of the game to level the score for the home team.
Both teams are still dealing with the disappointment of not qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria started strong and took charge of possession after a balanced start. Their efforts paid off in the 23rd minute when Terem Moffi scored, finishing smoothly to give Nigeria a well-deserved lead.
Poland struggled to get clear chances for most of the first half. They managed to equalize in stoppage time when Kacper Potulski scored from close range, sending both teams into halftime at 1-1.
After the break, Nigeria made several substitutions as coach Eric Chelle rotated his squad to try different strategies for future matches.
The fresh players brought new energy to the Super Eagles, who controlled much of the second half. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Raphael Onyedika, Calvin Bassey, and Semi Ajayi were among the substitutes as Nigeria searched for a winning goal.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 76th minute when VAR detected a handball in the Polish penalty area. Onuachu stepped up and calmly scored from the penalty spot to put Nigeria ahead again.
The Super Eagles seemed on track to grab their second win ever over Poland. They had beaten Poland 1-0 in Wroclaw in March 2018, thanks to a penalty from Victor Moses.
But Poland pushed hard in the closing minutes and found success in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Defender Wiśniewski finished brilliantly, making it 2-2 and denying Nigeria the win.
Even though conceding so late was disappointing, the draw showed positive signs for Nigeria. They displayed good attacking play and depth in a tough match against one of Europe's well-known football teams.
