List of EPL Clubs That Made Big Money from Player Sales

The Premier League is known for spending big in football, but clubs in England’s top division have also made a lot from selling players.

As the new season approaches and the summer transfer window is still open, the 20 current Premier League clubs have been ranked by Planet Football on Saturday based on the highest transfer fees they have earned for players.

20. Coventry City, Viktor Gyökeres (£17.5m)

Coventry City made a good profit when Viktor Gyökeres moved to Sporting in 2023.

The Swedish striker scored 21 goals in the Championship before heading to Portugal. He went on to become one of Europe’s top forwards, scoring 29 goals in his first season with Sporting and 39 in his second.

19. Hull City, Jarrod Bowen (£22m)

Hull City got an initial £18m from West Ham for Jarrod Bowen, with add-ons bringing the total to about £22m.

Bowen has become an important player for West Ham, making the transfer a smart deal for Hull.

18. Sunderland, Jobe Bellingham (£27m)

Jobe Bellingham followed his older brother Jude by moving to Borussia Dortmund.

The midfielder developed well at Sunderland before moving to Germany, where he is building his reputation.

17. Ipswich Town, Omari Hutchinson (£37.5m)

Ipswich Town lost many talented players after being relegated from the Premier League.

16. Arsenal, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£40m)

Arsenal’s biggest sale is still Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s £40m transfer to Liverpool.

The Gunners have not always been known for making big money from player sales, but that could change as their squad grows in value.

15. Leeds United, Raphinha (£49m)

Raphinha’s £49m move to Barcelona is Leeds United’s record sale.

The Brazilian had become a key attacker for Leeds before moving to Spain.

He has developed into one of the world’s top attackers and an important player for Barcelona.

14. Fulham, Aleksandar Mitrović (£50m)

Fulham made good money when Aleksandar Mitrović transferred to Saudi club Al-Hilal for £50m.

The Serbian scored 43 goals during Fulham’s promotion campaign and added 14 in their first season back in the Premier League.

Although Fulham would have liked to keep him, the fee was too good to turn down.

13. Bournemouth, Antoine Semenyo (£64m)

Antoine Semenyo’s release clause made it likely he would leave Bournemouth after his strong performances.

Manchester City eventually paid £64m for the forward.

Semenyo joined as part of a big recruitment push in January and is expected to play a key role for City.

12. Crystal Palace, Eberechi Eze (£68m)

Eberechi Eze’s departure brought Crystal Palace £68m after he moved to Arsenal.

Eze was one of Palace’s top players, and his sale was another major deal for the Eagles.

11. Brentford, Bryan Mbeumo (£71m)

Brentford received £71m when Bryan Mbeumo joined Manchester United.

The Bees had signed Mbeumo from French club Troyes for about £5.8m in 2019, so they made a big profit from the Cameroon international.

His growth shows Brentford’s successful recruitment strategy.

10. Everton, Romelu Lukaku (£75m)

Romelu Lukaku became Everton’s record sale when Manchester United paid £75m for the Belgian striker.

Lukaku scored 25 Premier League goals in the 2016-17 season, finishing second to Harry Kane in the scoring charts.

City accepted Atlético’s offer, making a significant return from the striker’s departure.

7. Tottenham Hotspur, Gareth Bale (£85.1m)

Gareth Bale’s transfer from Tottenham to Real Madrid remains Spurs’ record sale.

Tottenham wanted a massive fee for the Welshman, who had become one of the best players in the world.

Though there were conflicting reports about the final amount, leaked documents later showed Real Madrid paid £85.1m.

Bale went on to win several Champions League titles in Spain.

Brighton has built a strong reputation for buying young players and selling them for big profits.

Moisés Caicedo’s £115m move to Chelsea is their biggest sale. Brighton had signed him for around £4m, leading to an impressive return on their investment.

5. Nottingham Forest, Elliot Anderson (£116m)

Elliot Anderson is Nottingham Forest’s record sale after Manchester City agreed to pay £116m for the midfielder.

Anderson impressed during his time at Forest and attracted interest from several top clubs.

His sale brings another financial boost for Forest and gives City a versatile option in midfield.

4. Aston Villa, Morgan Rogers (£117m)

Morgan Rogers became Aston Villa’s record sale when he moved to Chelsea for £117m.

Rogers had become one of Villa’s key attacking players before the big transfer.

1. Liverpool, Philippe Coutinho (£146m)

Liverpool tops the list after Philippe Coutinho’s £146m move to Barcelona.

The fee was massive at the time and still ranks among the biggest sales in Premier League history.

Coutinho made 106 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 25 goals and providing 14 assists, but he found it hard to become a key player at Camp Nou.

His most memorable moment against Barcelona came while on loan at Bayern Munich, when he netted twice in Bayern’s famous 8-2 Champions League win over his parent club.

Liverpool’s choice to sell Coutinho for such a huge fee proved to be smart, with the Brazilian still the most expensive player ever sold by a current Premier League club.
