Makinde wins Nigeria Cup for the third time

Makinde made history by winning his third Nigeria Cup title with a net score of 65.

The 29th Nigeria Cup golf tournament took place at Ikoyi Club 1938 over the weekend. Mike Makinde became the first golfer to win this title three times.

The seven-handicap golfer finished four shots ahead of his closest competitor, Anscy Okoebor. Abiola Johnson came in third place.

Makinde first won the tournament in 2022. He defended his title successfully in 2023. In 2024, he lost to Tayo Babalakin, and in 2025, Paul Tijani took the trophy. But this year, he returned to the top, making him the first three-time champion in the event's history.

After winning, Makinde thanked the organising committee for their hard work. He said his victory was due to dedication and effort.

“I consider winning again as an important part of my golfing career. I’m excited and happy with the outcome of this tournament,” he shared. He is hopeful for more wins in the future.

In the men’s gross category, Akeem Lawal took first place with a score of 75. Calli Udalor followed closely with 76, while Peter Eben-Spiff wrapped up the top three.

In the ladies’ net category, Adeyosola Ayodele won with a score of 71. Evelyn Oyome emerged victorious in the ladies’ gross category.

Mohammed Oybo, the Chairman of the 2026 Nigeria Cup Organising Committee, expressed happiness with how the tournament went. He thanked sponsors, committee members, and golfers for their support and dedication.

Oybo mentioned that the committee aimed to improve the competition and ensure a memorable week of golf for everyone involved.

The Nigeria Cup is held every year to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence anniversary.
