Olympic champion Masai Russell has set a new world record in the women’s 100m hurdles. This ends the four-year reign of Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan in this event, according to PUNCH Online.
Russell clocked an impressive 12.09 seconds at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday. This time is three hundredths of a second faster than Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12 seconds.
The American athlete finished first, while Amusan came in second with a time of 12.23 seconds.
Before Russell’s record-breaking run, Amusan had held the world record of 12.12 seconds. She set this time in the semi-finals at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.
Amusan won the final in a time of 12.06 seconds, but that time did not count as a world record because of excessive tailwind.
Earlier this year, Russell almost broke the record. She ran 12.14 seconds at the Xiamen Diamond League in May. At that time, she was the second-fastest woman ever in the event.
With her new time of 12.09 seconds in Zurich, Russell is now the first woman to run faster than Amusan’s previous record.
