World record holder Tobi Amusan and her fellow Nigerians, Ezekiel Nathaniel and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, will compete at the final Diamond League meeting of the season in Zurich on Thursday. This was reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
The event will be held over two days. The women’s pole vault competition will kick off at Zurich train station on Wednesday. The main events will take place at Letzigrund Stadium on Thursday.
Zurich offers athletes their last chance to earn points to qualify for the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 4-5.
Amusan and some other athletes have already made it to the Diamond League Final. But many will be aiming for crucial points in Zurich to secure their spots. Amusan's last Diamond League race was in June before heading to the Commonwealth Games, where she won a bronze medal.
Before the big final next month, Amusan will face off against USA’s Olympic champion Masai Russell. Russell has been on a winning streak in the women’s 100m hurdles. Her season includes a time of 12.14 seconds in Xiamen in May, just 0.02 seconds off Amusan’s world record.
Other competitors in the women’s 100m hurdles in Zurich include Alaysha Johnson, Nadine Visser, and local favorite Ditaji Kambundji.
Nathaniel is currently eighth in the men’s 400m hurdles standings with 10 points. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist will again race against Karsten Warholm and Alison dos Santos. This comes just days after they competed against each other at the Silesia Diamond League meeting in Chorzów, Poland.
Enekwechi, who ranks ninth in the Diamond League standings this season, will face world No. 1 Leonardo Fabbri from Italy, Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell, and New Zealand’s Tom Walsh.
After Zurich, there are two major events left in the global athletics calendar. The Diamond League Final will take place in Brussels, Belgium, from September 4-5. The World Athletics Ultimate Championship is set for Budapest, Hungary, later in September.
