The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has urged for more investment in Nigeria's green economy. He said better environmental governance and climate action are vital for the country's future development.
He made this statement on Monday. This comes ahead of the Nigeria Environmental Summit Day 2026, which will hold later this month. At the summit, policymakers, development partners, investors, and other stakeholders will discuss climate action, environmental governance, and ways to achieve sustainable development.
“The future of Nigeria’s prosperity depends on how effectively we protect our environment, build resilient communities, create green jobs, and mobilise investments into sustainable development,” Mr Lawal said during a press briefing in Abuja.
He pointed out that Nigeria needs to take advantage of new opportunities in the green economy. This requires policies that support environmental sustainability.
The minister also said that climate action should not just be seen as an environmental issue. It is also an economic chance that can create jobs and draw in investments.
The summit will give stakeholders a chance to discuss how to align policy, finance, and innovation to reach sustainable development goals. Mobilising financial support for environmental and climate-related projects will be a key topic.
Expected attendees include environmental experts, development partners, researchers, private-sector representatives, civil society organisations, and youth groups. They will work together to find solutions.
Mr Lawal mentioned that reaching the country’s environmental and climate goals will need ongoing teamwork among stakeholders. Long-term investment in sustainable development projects is also crucial.
He stressed that better collaboration between government bodies, development partners, and the private sector is essential for speeding up Nigeria’s shift to a low-carbon economy.
The briefing also introduced the Annual National Tree Planting Campaign. This initiative aims to promote environmental restoration and tackle the effects of climate change.
The Federal Ministry of Environment believes this campaign will encourage ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, and climate adaptation across Nigeria.
