Onyinyechi Ndubuisi is thankful for Anambra State’s free maternal healthcare program. It saved her family from huge medical costs after she had triplets through a caesarean section.
Mrs Ndubuisi gave birth to two girls and a boy at Okpoko General Hospital on Monday, July 6, under the state's free antenatal, delivery, and maternal healthcare program.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, she called the initiative life-changing. She said it provided quality healthcare during her pregnancy without any payment.
“The free maternal and delivery services ensure that quality healthcare is available to all, irrespective of state of origin.
“I’m grateful to the Anambra government for easing the financial pressure on my family. I cannot explain where we would have raised the money,” she said.
Mrs Ndubuisi is from Onu-Eke, Ezza North Local Government Area in Ebonyi State. She lives in Awada, Obosi, which is in Anambra’s Idemili North Local Government Area.
She noted that the program improved access to maternal healthcare. It helps pregnant women get professional medical attention, no matter their financial situation.
Mrs Ndubuisi also praised the healthcare workers at Okpoko General Hospital for their professionalism and dedication during her pregnancy and delivery.
She especially thanked the doctor who resuscitated her third baby shortly after birth. She described the doctor’s action as timely, skillful, and life-saving.
According to her, the medical team’s skill and commitment gave her family confidence during the delivery. This also strengthened public trust in government-owned healthcare facilities.
She urged expectant mothers to register early for antenatal care at government hospitals to benefit from qualified health professionals and proper monitoring during pregnancy.
Mrs Ndubuisi said government hospitals have capable doctors, nurses, and other professionals who can manage pregnancies and ensure safe childbirth for mothers and babies.
She warned pregnant women against seeking treatment from unqualified practitioners. She stressed that skilled medical care is important to prevent avoidable complications.
She prayed for God’s blessings on Governor Charles Soludo for continuing policies that focus on maternal and child healthcare in Anambra.
In September 2023, Mr Soludo started free antenatal and delivery services for pregnant women. He promised to keep this program going throughout his administration.
