New Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said on Friday that he is on a "mission" to build the right culture at the club during his second time in charge.
The experienced Portuguese was at the club’s training ground overseeing preparations for pre-season starting next week, after he took over from Alvaro Arbeloa in June.
Los Blancos did not win any major trophies in the last two seasons. Many see Mourinho’s return as President Florentino Perez trying to bring back order and discipline in the team.
"Words are not enough because this is like a mission," Mourinho told Real Madrid TV.
"I’m not worried about myself, or if I will win a lot or a little. I am here to help everyone to be better, players, staff… to create a culture of work, responsibility, ambition, and something I know well, which is the responsibility and honour of working for Real Madrid."
Last season, managing the big egos in the team was tough. Coach Xabi Alonso left in January, while midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Fede Valverde had a clash in May that sent Valverde to the hospital.
Neither Alonso nor Arbeloa could figure out how to get star players Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Junior to play together without throwing off the team’s balance.
During his first time at the club from 2010 to 2013, Mourinho helped Madrid compete against Pep Guardiola’s strong Barcelona team and built a fighting spirit within the club.
"It’s not about working at Real Madrid, it’s working for Real Madrid," continued the 63-year-old coach.
"It’s with this mission-driven spirit that I am here."
Real Madrid has already signed several players this summer, including Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries, and Ibrahima Konate.
