The first National Intermediate Games, which was set to take place in Lagos from October 1 to 15, 2026, has been moved to the first quarter of 2027. This change allows for more preparations to ensure the event meets high standards.
The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) officially informed the National Sports Commission (NSC) about the postponement. This decision came after a thorough review of the preparations by the Local Organising Committee, the NSC, and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist.
This review followed a Joint Technical Meeting held from September 3 to 6, 2026. It addressed proposed facilities, sporting events, technical requirements, rules, regulations, and other important operational areas.
A statement from Kola Daniel, the Special Adviser on Media in the Office of the Director-General at the National Sports Commission, was shared on Facebook on Wednesday. The assessment showed that while the Games could technically go ahead, the remaining time was not enough to deliver the first edition to the expected standard.
"While the review established that the Games could technically proceed, it also determined that the remaining timeframe may not be sufficient to deliver the inaugural edition to the standard befitting Lagos and an event of national significance," the statement said.
The NSC explained that the decision aims to maintain the quality, credibility, and long-term success of the Games. They believe this event should set a high standard for future editions.
"The postponement is intended to safeguard the quality, credibility and long-term success of the National Intermediate Games, which is expected to establish an operational benchmark for future editions," the statement added.
Lagos State, the host for the Games, has confirmed its commitment to organizing the event. They will keep working with the National Sports Commission and other partners until a new date is set by the Local Organising Committee.
Meanwhile, the NSC stated that its plans for the Games will continue as scheduled. This includes accreditation, zonal eliminations for team sports, and other technical and operational activities.
The Local Organising Committee will finalize and announce the new date for the National Intermediate Games.
