The Nigeria Boxing Federation’s professional arm, NBF-Pro, has started a 30-day free legal service for professional boxers in Nigeria. They are partnering with Emoni Sports Law, which will be their official legal advisory team.
In a statement released on Saturday, NBF-Pro explained that this service aims to help boxers who are stuck in unfair contracts with international promoters and managers. The goal is to solve contract issues that may have held back the careers of boxers both at home and abroad.
NBF-Pro said all boxers can access this service for free. It will include education for boxers on how to spot bad deals. A sports law team will review these contracts and remove any obstacles.
During this 30-day period, boxers can take advantage of a contract audit. This means reviewing current agreements with promoters and managers to find conflicts, illegal terms, and overlapping contracts.
They will also get legal advice on how to end or combine multiple contracts in a lawful way. There will be a compliance check to ensure future deals meet the standards of the NBF, the National Sports Commission, and World Boxing.
Boxers interested in this service should reach out to NBF-Pro through its official channels. They need to send copies of all their current contracts, both local and international, within the 30-day period for the service to remain free.
NBF-Pro chairman, Azania Omo-Agege, called this move an important step. He emphasized the need to educate and support boxers who may have fallen into unfair contracts over the years.
“Firstly, I must appreciate the leadership of the Nigeria Boxing Federation for the ongoing reforms, which have truly impacted the sport in the country,” Omo-Agege said.
“The process has covered every aspect of the sport. The legal framework designed to support our boxers will put an end to all kinds of contract issues that may have affected the careers of these athletes.”
