A House of Representatives candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency of Delta State, Julius Akbovoka, has asked the party's National Executive Committee to ensure fairness in the handling of the primary election results.
Akbovoka spoke on Tuesday during a press conference in Abuja. He said the results from the various voting centres should be included in the final results of the election.
His appeal comes just days after the NDC said it was not involved with the primary results circulating on social media.
On Sunday, the party's National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, told the public to ignore those results. He emphasized that only the National Executive Council can announce the results of the primaries held on May 28 and 29.
Akbovoka explained that he chose to speak to the press because he had not received official news about the primary election results from the party.
He joined the NDC on April 30 and took part in party activities like the convention and membership registration.
"I am not asking anyone to change the figures in my favour. My request is that the results recorded during the exercise should be properly reviewed and handled according to the party's rules and procedures," he said.
He also mentioned that he spoke with former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, and former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, regarding this issue.
He said both leaders encouraged him to keep using the party's internal dispute resolution processes.
Akbovoka is confident about his support at the grassroots level and urged the NDC leaders to maintain transparency, fairness, and internal democracy.
He mobilized thousands of new members into the party in the constituency and later bought the expression of interest form to run for the House of Representatives seat.
Akbovoka, who is a former local government chairman, stated that he was screened and approved by the party before taking part in the primary election that took place across the three local government areas in the constituency.
He presented numbers he claimed were from the voting centres, stating that he received the highest votes during the election.
According to him, he got 1,205 votes in Ughelli North while his nearest rival had 205 votes. In Ughelli South, he received 350 votes against 285 votes from another candidate.
He insisted that the election happened under the watch of security personnel and party officials. He added that he has documents and reports to back up the numbers he reported during the election.
