The federal government has stressed the need to improve relations with Israel. This is especially important in agriculture, security, defence, entertainment, education, and healthcare. These efforts are part of Nigeria’s plan to speed up socio-economic growth.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said this when he met the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in Abuja.
Mr. Akume pointed out Nigeria’s great possibilities. He mentioned the country’s large arable land, big population, and rich resources, including oil. He believes that with the right partnerships and investments, Nigeria can become a key player in food production, technology, education, and healthcare.
Reflecting on his two visits to Israel, the SGF praised the country’s achievements despite tough conditions. He especially admired Israel’s progress in healthcare, education, agriculture, and tech innovation. He called Israel a model of strength and smart development.
During the visit, the Israeli Ambassador, Michael Freeman, called Nigeria a lucky nation filled with opportunities. He highlighted the similarities between Nigeria and Israel. He noted that Israel has turned dry desert lands into productive farms using better irrigation and farming methods.
The ambassador showed Israel’s willingness to work with Nigeria to grow its agricultural sector. He wants to increase food production and help Nigeria become a top exporter of farm products. He said strong political will and commitment are essential for making this change happen.
Mr. Freeman also mentioned that Nigeria and Israel face similar security issues, especially terrorism. He said terrorism is a global problem that needs a united response. He wanted to learn more about Nigeria’s priorities in troop training, cybersecurity, tracking illegal money, border safety, and tactical needs to find ways to work together.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Homeland Security, Adeyinka Famadewa, also spoke. He said Nigeria and Israel share common security challenges. He pointed out that both countries deal with terrorism and insecurity. Israel has developed advanced technology and security systems that could help Nigeria.
Mr. Famadewa, a retired major general, stressed the need for better intelligence sharing, training programs, and capacity building between the two countries. This would help strengthen Nigeria’s security measures and improve the country’s ability to handle new security threats.
The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Ibrahim Kana.
