During a meeting with Ms Grynspan, Mr Shettima said Nigeria will support any candidate for the UN Secretary-General position based on fairness and justice.
He also mentioned that Nigeria would back a candidate who supports Africa's goals in global matters. This includes getting African representatives into important decision-making roles and encouraging cooperation between nations.
Shettima said he would recommend the Costa Rican diplomat because of Nigeria's ties with Latin America and the importance of including women in leadership roles.
"Thank you for seeking Nigeria’s perspective for your candidature for the United Nations Secretary-General. Nigeria and Costa Rica share a common historical background connecting both countries and their regions.
“We also have a cordial relationship with Latin America, and we do not wish to jeopardise it. Beyond our historical ties and relations rest our interest in conflict prevention, multilateralism, and the peace of our nations," the Vice President stated.
He stressed the need for changes in global governance. He pointed out that the system has changed since 1945 but still does not include Africa, which has a population of over 1.3 billion people.
Earlier, Grynspan spoke with VP Shettima to ask for Nigeria’s support for her bid to become the UN Secretary-General. She expressed her desire to lead the UN in making the reforms that many countries, especially in the Global South, are calling for.
"Coming from the Global South, I represent the interests and demands of the region. I also have a soft spot for Africa. I know the continent and its aspirations," the Costa Rican candidate said.
She further stated that her campaign will focus on peace as a top priority. She promised that Africa’s goal of becoming a permanent member of the UN Security Council will get the attention it deserves.
