A chartered accountant and entrepreneur based in the United States, Agwu Ama Agwu, has become the candidate for the Nigerian Democratic Congress for the Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency. He has promised to focus on restoring stable electricity supply in the constituency if elected to the House of Representatives in 2027.
Agwu spoke with journalists after he was declared the winner on Saturday in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state. He said the ongoing power issue affecting Afikpo and Edda needs urgent political action and legislative support.
He called the lack of electricity in Afikpo for over 15 years embarrassing and very disappointing.
According to him, the answer to the electricity problem already exists. He mentioned the sub-power station built in Amasiri years ago but which is still not in use.
"The electricity issue is not only particular to Afikpo. It affects Edda and the whole of Ebonyi South. If that sub-power station in Amasiri is energized, the entire zone can enjoy better power supply. This is the kind of issue that should be part of a legislator’s constituency project," he said.
He also pointed out that if government funding becomes a challenge, legislators from the state should work together to make sure the project is completed for the people’s benefit.
Agwu described his selection as both humbling and motivating. He said it has made him more determined to serve the people and help them break free from what he called the grip of "recycled politicians."
"I feel very happy and humbled. This has given me greater reason to stay committed to the cause of serving my people and bringing real representation to them," he stated.
Looking back on the primary election, he shared how many party members turned out, including elderly people, those living with disabilities, and young voters. They waited for hours under the sun to take part in the process.
He said the determination shown by the people really touched him and he promised to fight for their interests.
"What is coming to Afikpo/Edda is redemption, hope and true representation. I am going to Abuja because of the people. I have decided to dedicate the next four years of my life to serving them and bringing fair representation home," he said.
Regarding political zoning in the constituency, Agwu argued that fairness requires the seat to rotate between Afikpo and Edda Local Government Areas.
He noted that since the current occupant from Afikpo has served two terms, it is only right for Edda to have the next representative.
"The constituency is made up of Afikpo and Edda. If one local government has held the position for eight years, fairness demands that the other local government should have the chance to serve," he insisted.
Addressing worries about other candidates from Edda running in the general election, Agwu expressed confidence in his chances. He said modern elections depend more on the character and credibility of candidates than just political party loyalty.
"People are no longer voting only for political parties; they are voting for individuals and their identities. Every candidate represents different values and different leadership qualities," he said.
He added that no matter how many candidates come from Edda or Afikpo, he believes his message and experience will set him apart from the others.
