Nigerian Leader Takes Charge of Commonwealth Fencing Federation

Nigeria Fencing Federation president, Adeyinka Samuel, has been elected as the president of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation.

Samuel won against the current president, Marie-France Dufour, during the federation’s Annual General Meeting held at Rugby School Nigeria, Atlantic City on Saturday.

He received 14 votes while Dufour got six.

This win makes Samuel the first African and Nigerian to lead the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, ending a long tradition of leadership from countries like Scotland, Australia, and Canada.

The election took place while Nigeria is hosting the senior and veteran Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, with over 20 nations taking part.

For the first time, U-23 and wheelchair fencing events will be included as competitions for medals. This change shows a commitment to inclusivity in the sport.

Delegates praised Samuel’s leadership and vision. They highlighted his journey from a world-class athlete to the president of the Nigeria Fencing Federation.

Under his leadership, Nigeria has hosted important events like the International Fencing Federation FIE-sanctioned Junior World Cups and African Championships.

Now, Nigeria is proud to be the first African country to host the Senior Commonwealth Championships.
