The Nigerian Triathlon Union has set September 30, 2026, for its election congress. This decision was made during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. Twenty-one executive board members attended this meeting.

The board also approved the electoral committee. It will be chaired by Mr Babatunde Fatayi-Williams, a well-known sports administrator. He is a trustee of the NTU and a former president of the Nigerian Swimming Federation.

Other members of the committee include Mrs Deborah Chidobi from the Nigerian Olympic Committee and Dr Sunday Enimola. Dr Enimola is the Chairman of the Ogun State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association.

The electoral process will begin with nominations on August 20. Nominations will close on September 8, 2026. The names of candidates will be published on September 12, 2026.

Triathlon combines three sports: swimming, biking, and running. This sport started in the early 70s. The International Triathlon Union, which governs the sport, was established in Avignon, France, in 1989.

Triathlon is not only an Olympic sport but also promotes gender equality. Women make up one third of all participants.

The Nigerian Triathlon Union is a private sports association. It was formed in November 2006 by experienced sports administrators. These individuals had previously held various positions at national federations.

Dr Lanre Glover led the group that founded the Union. He became the first president. Other founding members included Mr Banji Oladapo, Mr Babatunde Fatayi-Williams, and Prince Wale Oladunjoye. Dr Mrs Gloria Obajimi served as the first Secretary General of the association.

NTU became a member of the International Triathlon Union in February 2007. It also joined the African Triathlon Union at a Congress in Mauritius in April 2007. Drs Harry Ladapo and Lanre Glover represented NTU at that Congress.

In May 2007, NTU gained full membership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
