Nigerian wrestlers have kicked off their closed-door training for the World Wrestling Championships. The event will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, from October 24 to November 1.
Akuh Purity is the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation. He praised the federation’s President, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for supporting the training program.
Purity, who also coaches the Nigerian women’s wrestling team, said this decision shows the federation cares about giving the athletes the right preparation and support. This will help them compete well at the global event.
The Nigeria Wrestling Federation said the camp is happening in two locations, Bayelsa and Ondo States. The aim is to help the wrestlers sharpen their training and improve their technical and tactical skills.
Purity noted that the closed-door setup would allow athletes and coaches to focus completely as they prepare for top performance. He praised Adeniyi for showing interest in developing wrestling and for putting the welfare of Team Nigeria’s athletes first before major international competitions.
He emphasized that good preparation is key at this level. “The camping exercise would further strengthen the wrestlers physically, technically and mentally,” he said.
Purity also recognized the support given to Nigerian wrestlers based abroad. They have already taken part in pre-tournament training and other preparations. “Such initiatives show Adeniyi’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerian wrestlers, both home-based and foreign-based, get the support they need to compete internationally,” he said.
The 2026 World Wrestling Championships will see top wrestlers from around the world. Team Nigeria is set to compete in various weight categories.
