The factional National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Agbo Major, on Thursday raised concerns about ongoing disagreements in the party’s leadership. He warned that these issues could hurt the democratic process leading up to the 2027 general elections.
At a press conference in Abuja, Major said the NNPP is dedicated to following the law and its constitution when dealing with matters of membership, discipline, and leadership within the party.
He stated, "The New Nigeria Peoples Party is a law-abiding political organisation guided by its constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."
"Decisions relating to membership, discipline and leadership are governed by established procedures and not by the personal interests of any individual."
Major mentioned that the party has noticed attempts to create confusion about its legitimate leadership, despite legal rulings and court decisions on the matter.
"Our position remains clear and consistent. We are particularly concerned that despite various legal developments and judicial pronouncements relating to the affairs of our party, there are still attempts to accord recognition to individuals and groups whose status within the NNPP remains a subject of serious dispute," he said.
He emphasized the importance of institutions responsible for protecting democracy staying fair and focused on the law.
"It is our belief that institutions entrusted with safeguarding democracy must remain neutral, impartial and faithful to the rule of law. Democracy can only flourish when public institutions operate without fear or favour," he stated.
Major also noted that some people claiming to represent the party do not speak for its recognized leadership anymore. He called for a fair review of issues affecting the party's unity.
"The NNPP maintains that certain individuals who continue to parade themselves as representatives of the party no longer speak for the legitimate leadership of the organization," he said.
As Nigeria looks towards the 2027 elections, Major urged political groups and actors to solve internal issues openly.
"As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Elections, political actors must understand that actions taken today will have far-reaching consequences for the future of our democracy."
"No political alliance can succeed on the foundation of unresolved internal contradictions," he added.
He also urged the judiciary to keep playing its role in boosting public trust in democratic institutions.
Major said, "The judiciary must continue to uphold its constitutional responsibility as the last hope of the common man."
"Where there are allegations of disregard for judicial decisions, appropriate mechanisms within the law should be activated to preserve public confidence in democratic institutions."
He added that Nigeria’s democracy can only grow with respect for constitutional principles, accountability, and the rule of law.
"Nigeria’s democracy is bigger than any individual, political party or institution."
"The survival of our democratic system depends on respect for the rule of law, institutional accountability and adherence to constitutional principles," he said.
Major reaffirmed the NNPP’s commitment to building a strong political platform and using lawful means to protect the party’s identity and future.
"The NNPP remains committed to building a stronger political platform that promotes national unity, economic prosperity, social justice and good governance for all Nigerians."
"We will continue to pursue all lawful avenues to protect the identity, integrity and future of our great party," he added.
Major also called on party supporters across the country to stay peaceful and committed to democratic values.
"To our supporters across the country, I urge you to remain peaceful, vigilant and committed to the democratic process. Truth, justice and the rule of law will always prevail," he concluded.
