Former Super Eagles captain, Augustine Okocha, has shared how a famous solo goal against ex-Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn changed his career while he was at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Okocha said the goal, where he dribbled past Kahn to score, was when he first got noticed outside Germany.

On the Obi-Wan podcast on Monday, Okocha, who is also known as JJ, said Kahn was having one of his best seasons just before his move to Bayern Munich.

He noted that the moment became widely known across Europe, even before social media, and it remains a key highlight of his career.

“It was Oliver Kahn, and he was having his best season,” Okocha said.

He continued, “That goal changed my life. That was when I gained recognition outside Germany.”

The goal received a lot of attention on European television back then, even though social media was not a factor.

Okocha explained that he held onto the ball longer than he meant to before shooting. He stressed that he was not trying to embarrass Kahn but was looking for the right chance to score.

He recalled that his Frankfurt manager later joked that his place on the team depended on that goal going in.

“I didn’t mean to hold onto it that long. Whenever I want to shoot, I see somebody in front, so I was just trying to find the right moment to shoot.

“The saving grace was it did go in, because even the manager told me, had he been there, I didn’t score that goal, as long as he remains manager of this team, you will never play again,” he said.

Okocha mentioned that he has met Kahn since then but has never talked about that goal with him. He joked that Kahn’s serious attitude makes it hard to start that conversation.

“I’ve met him, but you don’t want to discuss that. He’s a big lad, and he never smiles,” Okocha said.

Okocha built his reputation at Eintracht Frankfurt after starting his European journey at a lower-tier German club. He later played for Fenerbahçe, PSG, and Bolton Wanderers, further establishing himself as one of Africa’s top attacking midfielders.
