Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo has reacted strongly after facing racist abuse on social media. This happened after she spoke out about a theft incident that affected her and other Nigerian players at their hotel in Casablanca. This was ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Okoronkwo had shared that cash was stolen from her and some teammates at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca. On Sunday, she took to Instagram to condemn the racist abuse while reminding everyone that the team is focused on the tournament.
“Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that. We move forward with pride, unity and determination. See you on the pitch,” Okoronkwo wrote.
The midfielder mentioned that she, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade were among those who lost money from their hotel rooms. This happened before the Super Falcons left Casablanca for Rabat.
After she spoke out about the theft, Okoronkwo’s Instagram was filled with racist messages. Many users posted monkey emojis and other hurtful comments.
The theft case has taken a new turn. Reports say a suspect was arrested and has confessed to the crime. Nigerian journalist Colin Udoh, who used to work with the Super Eagles, said the suspect is expected to pay back what was stolen while legal actions are ongoing.
Udoh also urged football governing bodies to respond to the racist abuse aimed at the Nigerian player. “I hope @FIFAcom, @CAF_Online, @CAFwomen and @CAF_Media take note and take action. This is unacceptable,” he shared on social media.
Despite all these distractions off the field, the Super Falcons are focused on winning their 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title. Justine Madugu’s team will kick off their Group C campaign against Malawi on Tuesday. They will also face Zambia and Egypt in the group stage.
