Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika has moved to Eintracht Frankfurt. He follows in the footsteps of Austin Okocha to become the sixth Nigerian to play for the German club, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Onyedika switched to Frankfurt from Club Brugge. He signed a five-year deal that lasts until June 2031. He will wear the No. 25 shirt.
Other Nigerians who played for the club in the past include striker Isaac Ojigwe from 2002 to 2004, defender Donald Agu from 1998 to 2000, Nduka Anyanwu from 1997 to 1998, and Henry Isaac from 1998 to 2002.
During his time at Brugge, Onyedika won two league titles, the Belgian Cup, and the Belgian Super Cup. He also lifted the Danish Cup with FC Midtjylland during his first time outside Belgium.
Onyedika brings a lot of experience to the Bundesliga team. He has made 268 senior club appearances in all competitions. This includes 24 outings in the UEFA Champions League over the last three seasons.
He has also earned 26 senior caps for Nigeria. He was part of the Super Eagles squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. This is one reason the club wanted to sign him throughout the summer.
Markus Krösche, Frankfurt's board member for sport, said, "Raphael Onyedika has not only impressed us with his physicality and strategic understanding of the game, but above all with his extraordinary consistency."
He added, "He has been a regular starter in recent years and has won numerous trophies in Belgium. He also boasts valuable international experience. At 25, he still has great potential and is an important building block in terms of the structure of our squad."
Onyedika had been linked with a move away from Belgium since last season. The 25-year-old is expected to make his unofficial debut against Hull City in a pre-season friendly next weekend.
He may also play his competitive debut against St. Tönis 1911/20 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on August 21.
