Onyemaechi and Otele Face New Challenges After Coaches Get Sacked

Super Eagles players Bruno Onyemaechi and Philip Otele are entering a new phase at their clubs. This comes after Olympiacos and FC Basel both fired their head coaches on Wednesday.

These coaching changes mean the Nigerian internationals must adjust to new strategies and systems. They will work under new leaders at their respective clubs.

Olympiacos announced they have ended their partnership with José Luis Mendilibar. This wraps up the Spaniard’s two-year stint with the Greek club.

The 65-year-old had a successful time at Olympiacos. He led the team to victory in the UEFA Conference League in 2024.

Mendilibar still had a contract until next year. But Olympiacos decided to end it early.

This decision comes even though the club started the new Greek league season well, earning seven points in their first three matches.

But Olympiacos faced disappointment in Europe earlier this summer. They were knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by NEC Nijmegen, losing 2-1 on aggregate.

Onyemaechi had become a regular player during Mendilibar’s time at the club. He made 44 appearances in all competitions and contributed to two goals.

Now, the Nigerian defender must adapt to a new tactical style as Olympiacos looks for Mendilibar’s replacement.

On the other hand, Otele is also dealing with a coaching change at FC Basel. The Swiss champions have sacked head coach Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Lichtsteiner's exit comes after seven Super League matches and two straight home losses. Basel decided to make a change early in the season.

Assistant coach Luigi Nocentini will take charge temporarily while the club looks for a new permanent coach.

For Otele, this coaching change means another adjustment. He played in eight matches while Lichtsteiner was in charge at Basel.

The Nigerian winger now needs to impress a new coach. He wants to secure a more regular spot in the Basel team.

Even though the reasons for the two coaching changes are different, both Onyemaechi and Otele now face similar challenges. They must convince their new coaches of their worth and quickly adapt to new tactical requirements.

For Onyemaechi, the goal is to build on the 44 appearances he made under Mendilibar. Otele hopes the new coach will give him a chance to make a stronger impact at Basel.
