Osaze Shares Funny Kit Story from 2008 Olympics

Former Super Eagles star Osaze Odemwingie has shared how a mix-up at the 2008 Beijing Olympics led to a funny kit issue for Nigeria’s U-23 football team.

In a chat with Super Falcons captain Rashidat Ajibade, Odemwingie looked back at how Samson Siasia’s squad surprised everyone, including themselves, by going far in the tournament.

Odemwingie explained that officials from the football federation booked the team’s return tickets before the tournament even started. They expected the team to go out early, so they sent the players’ main kits back to Nigeria.

But instead of an early exit, the Super Eagles made it past the group stage and into the knockout rounds, leaving the players without proper matchday kits.

Kit Crisis

The situation became quite funny when the team had to borrow kits from the women’s team to have something to wear for the knockout matches. Odemwingie recalled, "At the Beijing Olympics with Siasia, we had to wear the girls’ kits for the second round and the rest."

He added, "Apparently, they thought we were not going to get far. They sent all the kits back home to give away or whatever. The Falcons, I think they didn’t make it through the next stage, they now left their kits."

Other teams noticed this unusual situation. Odemwingie mentioned that players from the United States team teased the Nigerians for wearing the same clothes in every match. With few options left, some players ended up buying plain white T-shirts to change their look.

"Then we made it out of the group and the American team is saying, ‘You guys are wearing the same clothes all the time’. They laughed at us."

He added, "Some of us went to buy plain white T-shirts."

Despite the kit trouble, the team didn’t let it stop them. Nigeria made it all the way to the gold medal match, finishing with a silver medal after losing 1-0 to Argentina, thanks to a goal from Ángel Di María.

Even though the Beijing journey is celebrated for its success, Odemwingie’s story with Ajibade shows a lighter side of football. It was a mix of poor planning and the players' determination that made the experience memorable.
