Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is set to play for Galatasaray after the first international break of the 2026/27 season. This is according to reports from Turkey.
Osimhen is expected to join the squad for Galatasaray’s Süper Lig match against Kasımpaşa on October 9 as he recovers from his injury.
The former African Footballer of the Year was initially picked for Nigeria's squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. But two days later, it was confirmed that he would not be joining the team.
“Victor Osimhen’s recovery from a muscle strain has been slower than expected. He was included in Nigeria’s squad for the AFCON qualifiers because Galatasaray and Super Eagles technical crew were hopeful he would be fit for the Super Lig game versus Trabzonspor and ready for the international window,” said Promise Efoghe, the team’s media officer.
Osimhen got injured during Galatasaray’s match with Başakşehir on September 4. Since then, he has missed games against Sporting Lisbon, Kocaelispor, and Trabzonspor.
With Osimhen out, Taiwo Awoniyi from Coventry City will return to the Super Eagles for the first time in two years.
Awoniyi’s return was announced on Sunday after the team doctors confirmed Osimhen’s withdrawal.
Other strikers who might play in the Super Eagles attack include Tolu Arokodare, Akor Adams, and Rafiu Durosinmi. They have all been performing well for their clubs.
Before getting injured, Osimhen was in great form, scoring six goals and providing two assists in his first four matches of the season.
