The Police Command in Enugu State has detained 6,240 suspects. They also recovered 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of different ammunition. Furthermore, they rescued 211 victims from kidnappers in 17 months of ongoing security operations in the state.
The Police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, who is a superintendent of police, shared this information in a statement. He issued the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, on Saturday in Enugu.
Commissioner Giwa revealed these figures while welcoming the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, Miller Dantawaye. This happened during a working visit to the command on Friday.
He explained that the 17-month period includes the operational successes since he took over as the police commissioner in Enugu State on March 11, 2025.
The police commissioner noted that among the suspects detained were 158 people linked to kidnapping, 186 for armed robbery, 188 for murder, and 57 for rape. He mentioned that 273 suspects were connected to cult activities, while 63 were arrested for illegal possession of firearms.
The commissioner added that the other 5,315 suspects faced various charges, including theft, burglary, and vandalism. He also disclosed that the firearms recovered included 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 assault rifle.
In addition, the command seized 209 vehicles, which included cars, tricycles, and motorcycles during their operations. The commissioner credited their success to intelligence-driven operations, proactive policing, and good security cooperation with neighboring states.
He pointed out the deployment of the Violent Crime Response Unit, increased border patrols under the Inspector-General of Police’s Handshake Patrol initiative, and better emergency response through the Distress Response Squad and Command-and-Control Centre.
Commissioner Giwa asked for continued support from the police zone, especially in areas like manpower, operational logistics, and personnel welfare. This would help the command to build on its successes.
In response, AIG Dantawaye urged the officers and men of the command to maintain professionalism, discipline, and accountability. He emphasized the importance of following Force regulations and respecting the rights of citizens.
He encouraged the personnel to stay focused on their duties and keep public trust in the police. He expressed his willingness to work with them to enhance security in Enugu State.
