The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 53-year-old man, Gambo Hassan, also known as "Anahaka." He is suspected of kidnapping, rape, armed robbery, and illegal possession of weapons in Bauchi metropolis.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, shared this information in a statement to PUNCH Metro on Sunday. He said the suspect was caught through smart policing and secret operations.
Habib explained that officers from the 'B' Division, GRA, Bauchi, arrested Hassan on September 11, 2026, around 8:45pm during a routine patrol on Adamu Jumba Road.
He said, "On September 11, 2026 at about 2045hrs, officers from 'B' Division GRA, Bauchi, on routine patrol arrested 53-year-old Gambo Hassan, alias 'Anahaka,' a male from Igbo Quarters in Bauchi."
The PPRO stated that early investigations showed the suspect pretended to be a commercial motorcycle rider, known as Okada, during the evening to target unsuspecting passengers, especially women.
He added, "Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect disguised himself as a commercial motorcycle rider, 'Okada' during evening hours to target, kidnap, rob, and sometimes rape unsuspecting passengers, particularly women."
Habib noted that the suspect was found with a sharp knife and riding a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number BAU 150G. He was also wearing a black mask and cap.
He said, "At the time of arrest along Adamu Jumba Road, he was found with a sharp knife and was riding a Bajaj motorcycle with Reg. No. BAU 150G, while wearing a black face mask and a face cap."
The police spokesman mentioned that the suspect confessed to the crimes during questioning. He also helped detectives identify some of his alleged victims.
"During interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime. He further led detectives to identify 15 women within the Bauchi metropolis as victims of his actions. The number of identified victims later rose to thirty-five women," Habib said.
He revealed that detectives conducted a search at the suspect's home and found several items believed to be from his crimes.
According to him, the recovered items included 15 mobile phones, such as a Samsung Galaxy Fold, a Redmi, two iTel phones, two iPhones, four Infinix phones, and two Tecno phones; three power banks; six women's wristwatches; six native caps; five bundles of women’s wrappers; three women’s hijabs; and N425,435 cash.
Habib added that they also found Kenyan and Turkish currency notes, among other items, at the suspect's house.
The PPRO stated, "Following standard procedures, the suspect and all recovered items have been sent to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Bauchi, for thorough investigation and prosecution."
He quoted the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, who praised the detectives for their alertness and professionalism in catching the suspect.
The commissioner also assured residents that the police would keep working to rid the state of criminals.
Habib mentioned that the CP "urged the public, especially victims, to come forward with useful information to help the investigation."
The command assured residents that it is committed to reducing crime across Bauchi State.
