A gang of armed robbers causing trouble in Ondo and Lagos States has been caught. This happened after the Ondo State Police arrested three suspects on Saturday.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo, Felix Ohagwu, spoke to journalists on Monday in Akure. He said the suspects are part of a known robbery gang that has been blamed for many robbery cases in Ondo and Lagos States.
The suspects are Promise Daniel (34), Ifeanyi Umahi (29), and Adaramoye Abayomi (37). They were arrested on Saturday, July 18, after a careful operation by the police.
Mr Ohagwu said, "The arrest was made in connection with an armed robbery case reported on June 14, 2026, at Iju Division, Ita-Ogbolu, Akure North Local Government Area."
"Based on reliable information and ongoing surveillance, the operatives stopped the suspects as they were driving a Mercedes-Benz ML 350 SUV (ash color)."
A search of the vehicle uncovered several items. These include one AK-47 rifle, one magazine with eighteen rounds of live ammunition, one English-made Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of live ammunition, one UTC axe, and one iron cutter.
The commissioner explained that investigations showed the suspects are part of a well-known robbery gang on the police's watchlist for violent robberies in Ondo State.
During questioning, the suspects provided useful information about the weapons and other crimes they committed.
Mr Ohagwu said, "The information is helping the police find other gang members who are still on the run and uncovering their full operations."
This arrest happened shortly after an attack on a woman named Adebusoye Atinuke, 50, on Sunday, July 19, along the Ondo, Ile-Oluji Road. The gunmen tried to stop her but failed.
The police reported that the gunmen shot at her vehicle around 6:30 p.m. But she bravely kept driving despite the gunfire.
Police spokesperson Jimoh Abayomi said the command has started a full investigation and is searching for the armed men who attacked Mrs Adebusoye on Sunday.
He noted, "The attackers fired at her vehicle in an attempt to stop and rob her. But her quick thinking and bravery helped her escape unharmed, which made the suspects run into the nearby bush."
Operatives quickly responded to the scene and began searching the area to catch the suspects.
Abayomi added, "The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and we are working hard to identify, track, and arrest those responsible."
Ondo State is facing challenges with kidnappers and armed robbers, and security agencies have made several arrests already.
