The Portuguese Football Federation has confirmed that it will hold a special farewell for Cristiano Ronaldo after he announced his retirement from international football.

The federation paid respect to the legendary player, saying he holds a special place in Portuguese football. They assured him he will always be welcomed back.

“This will always be your home,” the FPF said in a statement on its X handle on Thursday, showing appreciation for Ronaldo’s contributions to the national team over the years.

The farewell will celebrate a remarkable international career. Ronaldo is Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the most important players in the country's football history.

At 41, Ronaldo ends his international journey with an impressive record of 146 goals in 234 matches for Portugal. This makes him the highest goalscorer in men’s international football.

His international career included several historic moments. He led Portugal to their first-ever European Championship title in 2016.

He also captained the national team to victory in the first UEFA Nations League in 2019 and the 2025 edition of the tournament.

Ronaldo’s commitment to Portugal helped start a new era for the national team. He inspired many footballers and fans in the country.

His exit from international football marks the end of an amazing chapter that began with his senior debut in 2003.

Though he will no longer represent Portugal internationally, Ronaldo is set to continue his professional career with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.

He is also aiming to reach 1,000 official career goals, having scored 985 according to the latest count on his career.

The FPF’s planned farewell will let Portugal honour a player whose achievements are a key part of the country’s sports history.

With the message, “This will always be your home,” the federation has shown that Ronaldo’s bond with Portugal will stay special even after he retires from international play.
