A football referee handed out 51 red cards after a big fight during a youth match in Brazil.
The fight happened between Uberlandia and Mamore in the Minas Gerais Under-20 Second Division. It lasted about 40 minutes on Sunday before military police had to step in, according to O Tempo, a Brazilian newspaper.
The referee’s report said the trouble started in the 54th minute when Mamoré player Davi celebrated his team’s third goal by taunting the other side’s bench.
A video that went viral on Thursday showed things getting worse when Uberlandia’s goalkeeping coach, Paulo Sérgio Dias Dos Santos, ran onto the pitch to confront Davi.
Chairs and stretchers were used as weapons during the fight. The referee also said that Uberlandia’s ball boys got involved by throwing punches and kicks.
Referee Drosghic Modesto claimed he received death threats and other violent threats from different people after the fight. He later filed a police report about the threats he faced.
The game was stopped for 40 minutes before it was called off completely.
The 51 red cards went to 43 players and eight staff members from both teams.
Guinness World Records says the previous record for the most red cards in a single match was 36. That record was set during an Argentine Primera D match in 2011.
