PRP demands Tinubu's resignation over rising insecurity

The Peoples Redemption Party, on Thursday, asked President Bola Tinubu to resign. They accused him of failing to protect the lives and property of Nigerians as insecurity worsens across the country.

This call for resignation follows serious concerns about security, especially after the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

The attack happened on May 15 when armed men invaded three schools in Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area. They took away many pupils and teachers, leaving families in shock.

This incident has sparked nationwide anger and fresh calls for changes in the country’s security system.

In a statement on Thursday, the National Chairman of the PRP, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said that security under the Tinubu administration has gotten worse. He noted that violent criminals are operating freely in many parts of the country.

Baba-Ahmed said no Nigerian is safe with the current government. He pointed out that insecurity has spread from previously affected regions to almost everywhere in Nigeria.

“It is clear that President Bola Tinubu has failed badly in his main job as President, which is to secure Nigerians. Under his watch, old threats have grown, and more Nigerians, regardless of age or status, have become victims of violent criminals,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He expressed sadness that the country’s security issues had escalated to the point that schoolchildren and other vulnerable people have become targets for criminals.

“From Generals to toddlers; from Bama to Badagry, no Nigerian is safe under this leadership. It is no longer just parts of the country that are overrun by criminals. Now, no Nigerian anywhere is safe from these violent criminals who take advantage of our weaknesses.

“Schoolchildren have become part of the many easy targets. It seems like the nation is beginning to accept this situation as normal. We must not give in to weak leadership and the actions of criminals. This is not how Nigerians should live.”

Baba-Ahmed accused the President of gathering too much power around himself without improving security for citizens.

“Our President has failed the nation, and there is no sign that he can do better. He has concentrated all the power in the country around him, yet he has not used it to protect Nigerians,” he stated.

The former presidential aide mentioned that democratic leadership needs accountability and responsibility. He insisted that Tinubu’s continued presence in office, even as security worsens, is not acceptable.

“In most democracies, President Tinubu’s failure to uphold accountability and responsibility would not be tolerated. Nigerians must stand up and call for an end to this failure and neglect. President Tinubu should resign, now!”

The opposition party added that Nigerians cannot wait for the 2027 elections to show their anger at how the government is handling insecurity.

“While he may think he can ignore our current problems and wait for 2027, Nigerians who keep falling victim to violent criminals cannot wait to vote him out in 2027.

“There is nothing democratic about allowing an incompetent and uncaring leader to finish their term. Nigerians should demand, loudly, that President Tinubu’s failure to protect us cannot go on any longer,” Baba-Ahmed added.

These latest criticisms come as worries grow over ongoing banditry, kidnappings, communal violence, and attacks in various parts of the country. These issues have increased calls for better security measures from the Federal Government.

The Presidency has repeatedly said that the Tinubu administration took over deep-rooted security problems and is using military and intelligence resources to fight crime across the country.
