The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) on Thursday called for President Bola Tinubu to resign. They accused him of failing to protect the lives and property of Nigerians as insecurity worsens across the country.
This call comes as worries about security grow, especially after the recent kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
The attack happened on May 15 when armed men struck three schools in Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area, taking many pupils and teachers and leaving families in shock.
This incident has sparked outrage across the nation and renewed demands for changes in the country’s security system.
In a statement on Thursday, the National Chairman of the PRP, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said the security situation under Tinubu's administration has gotten worse. He noted that violent criminals are now operating freely across many areas of the country.
According to him, no Nigerian is safe under the current leadership, as insecurity has spread from the usual trouble spots to almost every corner of the country.
"It is clear that President Bola Tinubu has failed miserably in his main duty as President, which is to protect Nigerians. Under his watch, old threats have grown and new ones have appeared. More and more Nigerians, regardless of age or status, have become victims of violent criminals," Baba-Ahmed said.
The PRP chairman expressed concern that security issues have worsened to the point where schoolchildren and other vulnerable people are now targets for criminals.
He said, "From Generals to toddlers; from Bama to Badagry, no Nigerian is safe under this leadership. It is no longer just some parts of the country that criminals have taken over. Now, no Nigerian anywhere is safe from the rising tide of violent crimes that exploit our weaknesses.
"Schoolchildren have become part of the soft targets, and it seems the nation is starting to accept this as normal. We must not accept the weakness of our leaders or the actions of criminals. This is not how Nigerians should live."
Baba-Ahmed accused the President of gathering too much power around himself without using it to improve security for citizens.
"Our President has failed the nation, and there is no sign that he can turn things around. He has collected all the power in the country, yet he has not used it to protect Nigerians," he stated.
The former presidential aide argued that democratic leaders should be accountable and responsible. He insisted that Tinubu's continued stay in office, despite the worsening security situation, is unacceptable.
"In many other democracies, President Tinubu's failure to uphold accountability and responsibility would not be tolerated. Nigerians must rise up to end this incompetence and indifference. President Tinubu should resign, now!"
The opposition party also pointed out that Nigerians cannot wait until the 2027 elections to express their unhappiness with how the government is handling security.
"While he might think he can ignore our serious problems and wait for voters to reject him in 2027, Nigerians who keep falling victim to violent criminals cannot afford to wait to vote him out in 2027.
"There is nothing democratic about keeping incompetent and careless leaders in power until their terms end. Nigerians must demand, loudly and clearly, that President Tinubu's failure to secure Nigerians can no longer be accepted," Baba-Ahmed added.
This latest criticism comes amid increasing worries about ongoing banditry, kidnappings, communal violence, and attacks on communities across the country. These issues continue to fuel calls for better security measures from the Federal Government.
The Presidency has often said that the Tinubu administration inherited serious security problems and is working hard with military and intelligence resources to deal with criminal activities nationwide.
