Cristiano Ronaldo has said he won’t rush to decide about his future after Portugal lost to Spain in his last World Cup game on Monday.
The 41-year-old football legend shared this on the eve of the last-16 match, which his team lost 1-0. He stated that this was his final World Cup.
When asked about what comes next, he said: “It was my last World Cup, yes, but I’ll have time to think about the rest, to be with my family, not make rash decisions, and just get on with life.”
Ronaldo, captain of Portugal and one of the greatest footballers ever, expressed his thoughts on the ups and downs of football. He said: “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and you have to move on.”
As the highest goal scorer in men’s international football, Ronaldo mentioned he would leave the World Cup stage “with a clear conscience.”
He added, “The truth is, the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016 (Euros), which for me is just as significant as a World Cup, honestly.”
Ronaldo continued, “That’s why, I repeat, I’m leaving with a clear conscience, at my best, and that’s it. Tomorrow is a new day, and life goes on.”
A decade ago, Ronaldo helped Portugal win the European Championship but never lifted the World Cup trophy, with his best result being a semi-final appearance 20 years ago.
